Picking a Helmet You'll Actually Wear

The safest helmet is the one on your head. Here's what the certifications mean, how to fit one properly, and why e-bike speeds change the maths.

The best helmet is the one you actually put on. A thousand-dollar lid hanging on a hook has a protective value of exactly zero.

So the real question isn't "which is safest" — it's "which is safe enough and comfortable enough that wearing it stops being a decision." Here's how to get there.

The certifications, briefly

CPSC is the US standard. Any helmet legally sold for cycling in the States meets it. It's a floor, not a ranking — a $40 CPSC helmet and a $300 CPSC helmet both passed the same test.

NTA 8776 is a Dutch standard written specifically for speed pedelecs — bikes assisting up to 28 mph. It requires more coverage (lower at the back and sides) and tests at higher impact speeds. If you ride a Class 3 bike at speed on roads, this is a genuinely relevant upgrade rather than marketing.

MIPS and similar systems (SPIN, WaveCel, Mips Air) address rotational forces — the twisting your head does in a real crash, which most impacts involve. The evidence for these is reasonable and they add modest cost. Worth having, not worth agonising over.

Virginia Tech's helmet ratings are the most useful independent comparison available, they test rotational and linear impacts, and they're free to look up. Worth five minutes before buying.

Fit matters more than the price

A badly fitted expensive helmet protects you worse than a well-fitted cheap one. This is the part people skip.

Level, not tilted back. Two fingers' width between your eyebrows and the front rim. A helmet pushed back off your forehead leaves the part of your head most likely to hit the ground uncovered — and it's the most common way people wear them wrong.

Side straps form a V just under each ear. Adjust the sliders. Most helmets ship with these in roughly the wrong place.

Chin strap snug. One or two fingers between strap and chin. Open your mouth wide — you should feel the helmet pull down.

The shake test. Fasten everything, then shake your head hard and nod vigorously. The helmet should move with your head, not slide around on it. If it shifts, tighten the retention dial at the back or you've got the wrong size.

Sizes vary a lot between brands. Measure your head circumference just above the eyebrows and check the actual chart rather than assuming you're a medium.

Why e-bike speeds change things

Standard bike helmets are tested at impact speeds representing a fall from a bicycle at typical bicycle speeds. On a Class 3 e-bike at 28 mph, you have roughly twice the kinetic energy of a rider at 20.

That doesn't make a normal helmet useless — most crashes aren't at top speed, and a CPSC helmet is enormously better than nothing at any speed. But it does mean two things are worth considering if you regularly ride fast:

Buy a helmet that fits properly, from a brand that publishes its certification, ideally with a rotational-protection system and a good independent rating. Spend more if you want better ventilation and lower weight, because those are the things that make you wear it every time.

Then fit it properly — level, V under the ears, snug strap — and put it on before every ride until you stop noticing you're doing it.
