"Night Riding: Lights, Visibility, and Not Getting Flattened"

Being seen and seeing where you're going are two different problems needing two different lights. Here's how to sort both without spending a fortune.

Most riders buy one light, clip it on, and assume they're sorted. Then they discover at 6 PM in November that "sorted" was doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Night riding has two separate problems, and they need two different answers.

Problem one: being seen

This is the one that keeps you alive, and it's cheaper to solve than the other one.

A white light on the front and a red light on the rear is the legal minimum almost everywhere in the US after dark, and it's non-negotiable regardless. You don't need much power for this — 50 to 200 lumens front and a decent rear is plenty on lit streets.

What matters more than raw brightness:

Side visibility is the bit everyone forgets

Your lights point forward and backward. Cars come from the side, at junctions, which is where a lot of collisions actually happen.

The cheapest fix in cycling: reflective material on something that moves. Ankle bands, reflective strips on your shoes, spoke reflectors, or reflective sidewall tires. The human eye is extremely good at spotting motion, and a pedalling ankle reads as "person on a bike" from much further away than a static reflector does.

Reflective vests are fine. Reflective on your moving legs is better.

Problem two: seeing where you're going

Completely different requirement. If you're riding anywhere unlit — a bike path, a park, a country road, a towpath — you need enough light to actually read the surface.

That means 600 lumens and up, and honestly 800-1,000 for riding at speed on an unlit path. This is where cheap lights fall apart: a lot of them advertise a number the light hits for thirty seconds before dimming.

Things worth knowing:

E-bikes make this more important than people expect. At 20-28 mph you're covering ground fast enough that a light adequate for 10 mph leaves you outrunning your own beam.

If your bike has built-in lights

Many e-bikes have integrated lights running off the main battery, which is genuinely convenient — nothing to charge separately, nothing to forget.

Two catches. Built-in front lights are often sized for being seen rather than seeing, so check whether yours is actually bright enough for unlit riding. And if your main battery dies, your lights die with it. Carry a small backup rear light regardless. They cost almost nothing and weigh nothing.

The pre-ride bit

Charge lights when you charge the bike. A light you didn't charge is a light you don't have, and the ride that ends after dark is almost always the ride that was supposed to end before it.

Anything meant to be a two-hour afternoon loop can become a three-hour one because of a puncture, a wrong turn, or a good stop. Carrying a small rear light on every ride, all year, is the habit that saves you. It goes in the pre-ride checklist with everything else.

Riding differently after dark

Lights don't change the fact that it's harder for everyone to see.

The setup that covers everything

If you want a straight answer: a decent 600-800 lumen front light with a wide beam, a rear light you run steady, a cheap backup rear light that lives in your bag permanently, and reflective ankle bands.

That's under a hundred dollars, it covers lit streets and unlit paths, and it survives one of your lights being flat.
