A flat on an e-bike is the same puncture as on any other bike, and a noticeably harder job.
The wheels are heavier, the tires are usually tighter on the rim, and if it's the rear wheel there may be a motor bolted into it with a cable attached. Worth knowing how it goes before you're doing it on a verge in the dark.
What to carry
Fits in a small saddlebag and turns a stranding into a twenty-minute delay:
- A spare tube — check your valve type. Most e-bikes use Schrader (the car-style valve), not Presta. Get the right one and check the size printed on your tire sidewall.
- Two or three tire levers. Steel-cored ones if your tires are tight; cheap plastic ones snap on stiff e-bike tires.
- A mini pump. CO2 is fast but you get one shot per cartridge, and e-bike tires are high volume — a hand pump you can rely on beats a cartridge you can't.
- A multi-tool with hex keys.
- A 15mm wrench if your bike has axle nuts rather than a quick-release. Many hub-motor bikes do.
- Gloves, or accept the consequences.

A patch kit is a good backup, but on the roadside, fitting a fresh tube is faster and more reliable than patching. Patch the old one at home.
Front wheel: mostly normal
If it's a front wheel with no motor in it, this is a standard bike repair.
Undo the axle, drop the wheel out, lever one side of the tire off, pull the old tube, run your fingers carefully around the inside of the tire to find whatever caused it, fit the new tube with just enough air to hold its shape, work the tire back on, inflate, refit.
The only e-bike difference is weight — the bike is awkward to hold up. Lean it against something or lay it down on its non-drive side.
Rear wheel with a hub motor: read this first
This is where it gets specific, and where people get stuck.
Turn the bike off and take the battery out before you start. Non-negotiable. You do not want the motor doing anything while your hands are in there.
Photograph everything before you loosen anything. Seriously. The exact position of the torque arms, the order of the washers and spacers, which way the cable routes, how it all sits in the dropout. Reassembling a hub motor from memory is how a five-minute job becomes a tow home.
Then:
- Deal with the motor cable. Some have a connector you can unplug — find it before you start pulling. Others are hardwired, meaning the wheel can only come away as far as the cable allows. Never let the wheel hang on the cable.
- Note the torque arms. These are the metal plates that stop the motor spinning in the dropout. They must go back on the same way round, and they must be tight. A hub motor that spins in an alloy dropout destroys the frame.
- Support the wheel as it comes out. A rear hub-motor wheel can weigh 15 pounds or more, and it will land on your fingers given any encouragement.
Refitting: axle fully seated in the dropouts, torque arms back exactly as photographed, axle nuts to proper torque, cable routed so it can't catch on anything or get pinched. Then spin the wheel and check it runs true and the brakes don't rub.
The roadside alternative
If you're not confident with the motor wheel, there's a legitimate option: leave the wheel on the bike. Deflate fully, lever one side of the tire off, pull the tube out around the axle, patch or replace it in place, and work it back in. Fiddlier, but no motor disassembly and no torque arms to get wrong.
Avoiding them in the first place
Punctures are much easier to prevent than to fix on a bike this heavy, and e-bikes get more of them — more weight through the tire and more speed into whatever you hit.
- Keep the pressure right. Underinflation causes pinch flats, where the tube gets crushed between the rim and an edge. This is the single biggest cause and it's free to avoid. It's in the weekly checks.
- Run puncture-resistant tires. Something with a real protection belt. They're heavier and slower and it doesn't matter, because you have a motor. This is the best upgrade on the list for anyone commuting.
- Add tire liners if you keep getting them.
- Consider tubeless if your wheels support it. Sealant handles small punctures without you noticing.
- Pull the glass out. When you spot a shard embedded in the tread, get it out before it works through to the tube.
- Avoid the gutter. That's where the debris collects — another reason not to hug the kerb, as covered in riding in traffic.
On a group ride
If someone flats, the group waits. That's not negotiable and it's in the etiquette guide for a reason.
Practical version: one person fixes it, one person helps, everyone else stays out of the way and off the road. Get well clear of traffic before starting. If it's a hub motor and nobody's confident, don't experiment on the roadside in fading light — call it, and figure out a lift.
Knowing when to stop
Some things aren't roadside repairs. A tire with a gash big enough to let the tube bulge through, a bent axle, a damaged rim, a motor cable that's been yanked — those are "get a ride home" problems, not "try harder" problems.
Boot a small tire cut with a folded energy bar wrapper or a proper tire boot to limp home slowly. Anything worse, stop. A five-mile walk beats a wrecked wheel or a crash from something you bodged.
