What to Check Weekly, Monthly, and Yearly on an E-Bike

E-bikes wear faster than regular bikes because they're heavier and the motor puts real torque through the drivetrain. Here's the schedule that keeps yours cheap to own.

E-bikes wear out faster than regular bikes, and it's not a quality problem — it's physics. More weight, higher average speeds, and a motor putting real torque through a chain designed for legs.

The upside is that almost all of it is predictable. Here's the schedule that keeps an e-bike cheap to own instead of expensive to fix.

Every ride

Sixty seconds, covered properly in the pre-ride checklist: tires, brakes, battery. Squeeze the tires, squeeze the levers, check the charge. That's it.

Every week

Tire pressure, with a gauge

Not a thumb this time. Tires lose pressure steadily whether you ride or not, and correct pressure is the cheapest performance, comfort and puncture protection you can buy.

Check the sidewall for the range and run in the upper half of it if you're heavier or carrying cargo.

Chain: is it clean and is it lubed?

Wipe the chain with a rag, and if it looks dry or sounds dry, lube it. A dry chain wears itself and the cassette at a dramatically faster rate, and on an e-bike the cassette is doing more work than it would on a regular bike.

Dry lube in summer, wet lube in winter and rain. Apply, let it sit a minute, wipe off the excess — lube belongs inside the rollers, not coating the outside collecting grit.

Quick wobble test

Front wheel between your knees, twist the bars. Push down hard on the saddle. Grab each wheel and rock it side to side. Nothing should move that isn't supposed to.

Every month

Chain wear, with a gauge

This is the one that saves the most money. A chain wear indicator costs about ten dollars.

A worn chain chews up the cassette and chainring, which turns a $30 replacement into a $150 one. On an e-bike, replace the chain at 0.5% wear rather than waiting for 0.75% — motor torque means the rest of the drivetrain wears much faster once the chain is stretched.

Depending on mileage and weather, e-bike chains often need replacing every 800-1,500 miles. That sounds frequent because it is.

Brake pads

Look through the caliper at the pad material. If it's getting down towards the backing plate, replace it now rather than discovering the problem as a metallic grinding noise on a descent.

E-bike pads wear faster than you'd expect from a regular bike — heavier bike, more speed, more energy to dissipate. Check both ends; the front usually goes first.

Torque check on the important bolts

Stem, handlebars, seatpost, brake calipers, and — specifically for e-bikes — the motor mounting bolts and the rear axle nuts. Motor torque works fasteners loose over time in a way that pedalling alone doesn't.

Use a torque wrench and the numbers printed next to the bolts. Overtightening carbon or alloy is its own expensive mistake.

Spokes

Squeeze pairs of spokes all round each wheel. They should feel evenly tight. A loose spoke on a heavy, powerful bike becomes a broken spoke and then a taco'd wheel quite quickly, especially on the rear of a hub-motor bike.

Every few months

Once a year

Get it professionally serviced, even if you do everything else yourself.

A shop will check bearings (headset, bottom bracket, wheel hubs), true the wheels, check the motor mount, inspect the frame properly, and diagnose the electrical side with tools you don't have. On an e-bike this is genuinely worth the money — the failure modes are more expensive than on a regular bike.

Also once a year: think about whether the battery is doing what it used to. Range dropping noticeably compared to the same ride last year is the main signal. Battery care covers what's normal and what isn't.

The e-bike-specific rules

Three things that don't apply to regular bikes and catch people out:

Never pressure-wash it. Bucket, sponge, low-pressure hose at most. Forced water past the seals is the leading cause of expensive electrical faults.

Power off and remove the battery before working on the drivetrain. A pedal-assist system that thinks you're pedalling while your fingers are near the chainring is a genuinely bad afternoon.

Take a photo before you take anything apart, especially a rear hub-motor wheel. Torque arms, washers, spacers and cable routing all matter, and reassembly from memory goes wrong. There's more on this in fixing a flat.

If you only do three things

Realistically, most people won't follow a schedule. So if you do nothing else:

1. Keep the tires at proper pressure. Affects everything. 2. Keep the chain clean and lubed, and replace it early. Saves the most money by a distance. 3. Get it serviced once a year. Catches what you missed.

Do those three and the bike will outlast your interest in maintaining it.
